I think most people (including myself on my previous watch through) are wanting to see the Doctor so we were disappointed in the previous 2 episodes without him and were thrilled to have him back in this. Once you are here for the Ian and Barbara show then you see the episodes different.

I was not expecting a courtroom drama but the Doctor makes a pretty good Perry Mason.

Lol. All these people like "The last two episodes sucked, but this one was great."
Guess we're here for different things,s cause the last 2 eps were my fav yet, and this one was a total bore.

Hartnell returns from vacation completely energized here, and his performance is excellent. This episode may showcase some of the first glimmerings of The Doctor as someone who is steps ahead of everyone else. Susan was feisty rather than whiny; Barbara was calm and steady; and Ian was stoic, trusting The Doctor to defend and rescue him from a tight spot. I've given five stars to episodes before this; however, not all five-star episodes are created equal, and this one was truly outstanding...

TARRON: "I mean that you are already guilty of this crime. The burden of defence is entirely yours. You must prove without any shadow of doubt that you are innocent, otherwise" IAN: "Otherwise?" TARRON: "You will die."
Very interesting setup for the episode. When the Doctor finally appears I felt elated after his absence for the last couple of episodes.

I don't know if the low quality of the few preceding episodes or the generally underwhelming writing of the 60s impact my judgment but: That was a cool episode.
The Doctor was at the center, the concept of Guilty until proven innocent was cool and having Chesterton being unable to get out of the situation by himself was a good idea. I love the fact that he instantly thinks of the Doctor when he needs someone to defend him. Nice touch.
The Doctor was really cool here. He was tricky, energetic and he wasn't a total d*ck.
3/5 I kind of like the Doctor now.

Not a great whodunit but a decent story.

Apart from Aydan who was zero subtle, this was indeed a good episode.

Finally...a solid episode.
