Satisfying ending. The Doctor’s final speech sure feels like the BBC did not believe that the show would continue to a second season. Reading the First Doctor Handbook it’s clear they were determined to get rid of Susan and to a lesser extent Barbara. Pamela Franklin was chosen as Susan’s replacement even before this episode aired, but that ended up not working out. That would have been interesting, though.

A strong end to a brilliant first season - I'll give this story a 9/10 and place it fifth, just behind 'The Edge of Destruction' (also 9/10) and ahead of 'Marco Polo' (again, 9/10)...

BARBARA: "Oh, I don't know. Yes, I do. It's this feverish activity to try and stop something that we know is going to happen. Robespierre will be guillotined whatever we do."

DOCTOR: "I've told you of our position so often."

BARBARA: "Yes, I know. You can't influence or change history. I learnt that lesson with the Aztecs."

DOCTOR: "The events will happen, just as they are written. I'm afraid so and we can't stem the tide. But at least we can stop being carried away with the flood!"

So once again the Doctor says how history can not be changed.
